Abstract (English)
The animal question is an intellectual debate focusing on the problems in our way of relating to animals. The relationship we establish with an animal is a relationship with a sentient, feeling, conscious being. This relationship has parties. It is hoped that the parties will derive mutual satisfaction, fulfillment, and existential pleasure from this relationship. But this dimension of the relationship with animals has been largely forgotten. This relationship has moved quite far from the character of a relationship established with an adult human or a human child. Our relationship with animals is not based on reciprocity: If it were based on reciprocity that respected satisfaction, consent, personality, and character, we could deeply feel the peace of living together on earth. To see animals only as "animals" is to see them as tools over which we possess and dispose of, and from whose benefits we derive pleasure.
