Abstract (English)
This article examines whether Plato’s Republic can be properly interpreted as a utopia, arguing that such a reading involves a methodological anachronism. The concept of utopia, which emerged in early modern political thought, is often retrospectively applied to Plato’s ideal polis, leading to interpretations that overlook the philosophical function of the Republic. This study proposes that the Republic should instead be understood as an epistemological thought experiment aimed at clarifying the nature of justice rather than as a concrete political blueprint. By analysing the structural analogy between the soul and the city, as well as the role of the philosopher-king, the article demonstrates that Plato’s primary concern is not the construction of an ideal society but the conditions under which justice can be known and articulated. From this perspective, the ideal city functions as a normative and heuristic model rather than a utopian project. The article concludes that reading the Republic as a utopia risks obscuring its epistemological and ethical dimensions, and that a non-anachronistic interpretation allows for a more coherent understanding of Plato’s philosophical aims.

Bu makale, Platon’un Devlet adlı eserinin ütopya olarak yorumlanmasının felsefi ve metodolojik açıdan ne ölçüde meşru olduğunu tartışmakta ve bu tür bir okumanın anakronik bir yaklaşım içerdiğini ileri sürmektedir. Erken modern dönemde ortaya çıkan ütopya kavramının, Platon’un ideal polis tasarımına geriye dönük olarak uygulanması, Devlet’in felsefi işlevinin gözden kaçırılmasına yol açmaktadır. Bu çalışma, Devlet’in somut bir siyasal düzen tasarımından ziyade, adaletin ne olduğuna ilişkin epistemolojik bir düşünce deneyi olarak okunması gerektiğini savunmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, ruh ile devlet arasındaki yapısal analoji ile filozof-kral figürü incelenerek, Platon’un temel amacının ideal bir toplum kurmak değil, adaletin hangi koşullarda bilinebilir ve dile getirilebilir olduğunu araştırmak olduğu gösterilmektedir. Bu bakış açısından ideal kent, ütopyacı bir proje değil; normatif ve sezgisel bir model işlevi görmektedir. Makale, Devlet’i ütopya olarak okumanın eserin epistemolojik ve etik boyutlarını gölgelediği sonucuna varmaktadır.
