Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and communication skills of the preschool teacher candidates. A review of literature suggests that relevant studies are limited. Teachers have always been one of the primary models for the preschool children. In this context, presence of communication skills in preschool teacher candidates and teachers are the most important step of the bond to be established with children. Also in terms of the emotional intelligence, the ability of the model, self-aware of one’s own emotions, to understand the emotions of the others by establishing correct communicative channels appears to be an influential factor for self-expression. The study group of the research as based on screening design was comprised of 114 teacher candidates (22 male and 92 female) attending to the Preschool Teaching Department of Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education, Necmettin Erbakan University. Relational screening method, as a general screening method, was used in the framework of the study. Personal Information Form, Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Communicative Skills Assessment Scale (IBDO) were used as the data collection tools of the study, and that the research data was analyzed by SPSS 16.0 statistical software. During the analyzes, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient technique was used to find out the relationship between the emotional intelligence and communication skills of the teacher candidates and Simple Linear Regression Analysis to find out whether the emotional intelligence had a precursor effect on communication skills. The level of significance was taken as .05 in statistical comparisons. The level of correlation between the emotional intelligence and communication skills of the preschool teacher candidates was examined as the first sub-problem of the research. Contrary to expectations, a negative, low level relationship (p< .05) was found between the scores of preschool teacher candidates involved in the study in the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale and the scores thereof in the Communication Skills Assessment Scale. As the second sub-problem of the study it was examined whether the emotional intelligence levels of the preschool teacher candidates had a precursor effect on communication skills. A review of the findings of the study suggested that the scores of the preschool teacher candidates in Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale predicted 3% of the scores in the Communication Skills Assessment Scale. This value was not at a level considered valid by behavioral sciences and thus concluded to be at unacceptable degree. As a result of the study it can be said that the emotional intelligence levels of the preschool teacher candidates are not effective in predicting their communication skills.
