TEACHERS 'DETERMINATION OF NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

This research is a qualitative research and aimed at revealing what the perceptions of professional development of teachers working within the Ministry of National Education. For this purpose, 85 teachers working in Düzce were collected through semi-structured forms. According to the teachers' opinion, most of them (83%, n = 65) did not consider themselves professionally enough and a few (17%, n = 20). A large number of teachers seem to be more active in activities such as professional seminars, conferences, workshops to improve themselves. Besides, they seem to need to constantly update themselves, trying to remain open to learning. When we look at findings, it turns out that the vast majority of teachers believe that they make an effective presentation (n = 73; 85.89%). A small proportion of teachers expressed that they were not as effective as their competent presenters (n = 12, 14.11%). According to the teachers' answers, interactive and technological equipment’s seem to be among the first order among those necessary for an effective presentation. In addition, their effective colleagues are among the answers they expect to receive from specialist teachers, physical conditions must be improved, different methods and techniques will improve the presentation, and courses should be liked to the students. The vast majority of teachers is volunteers at the point of creating a positive school climate and culture with other teachers, and is able to make social trips, activities, programs, etc., the activities can be arranged. According to the teachers' opinions, teachers should participate in trips and observations from abroad in order to improve themselves in the professional sense. Besides, it is required to give the necessary facilities for the academic studies carried out by the teachers. Providing school administrators with active guidance, provision of necessary support and facilities by the administration, and co-operation among the groups are among the suggestions that the teachers themselves should develop professionally.
