Abstract

Essential purpose of this study is to investigate if there is a correlation between professional social support perception of teachers, who work at special education institutions, and their professional efficacy beliefs. Another purpose of the study is to investigate the teachers‟ professional efficacy beliefs with respect to various variables. The study was performed with 174 volunteer teachers of whom 77 were female and 40 were male teaching at special education institutions in Tekirdağ city in the academic year of 2017-2018. “General information questionnaire” designed by the investigators was applied to the teachers while “Teacher Professional Social Support Scale” and “Teacher Professional Self-efficacy Scale” were applied to them to determine the perceived social support and professional efficacy. Descriptive statistics were calculated like arithmetical average, standard deviation, percentage and frequency in data analysis. t test, variance analysis and LSD statistical techniques were used in analyzing interaction of the dependent variable with the independent variables. Correlations between the data were analyzed by Pearson correlation technique. As a result, it was found that professional social support perceived by the teacher was positively correlated with the sub-dimension of the teaching efficacy when it was perceived from management, parents and students while colleague support was not correlated with teacher self-efficacy belief. Furthermore, the teacher‟s professional efficacy belief did not vary depending on his gender, age, education status and the department from which he had graduated while the teaching time in special education and the teaching experience made a positive difference in the dimension of efficient communication with the parents.
