Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to determine whether the teaching of "whole numbers", which is one of the basic subjects of mathematics, has an effect on mathematics achievement according to Dienes' 6-step theory. The independent variable of the research using the semi-experimental research model is the activities structured according to the Dienes principles, the effect of which is examined on the experimental group. The dependent variable of the research is academic success. The games prepared according to the 6-stage theory of Dienes were played in the experimental group during the lessons. The control group was carried out depending on the teaching textbook. Participants of the study carried out in a publfic school in Kastamonu in the second semester of the 2016-2017 academic year are 45 sixth grade students. Participants were determined by the method of appointment of the Independent, while there were 24 students in the experimental group and 21 students in the control group. The data of the study were collected with an academic success scale prepared by the researchers and analyzed with the help of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) package program. According to the results of the analyzes, it was seen that the achievement test scores of the experimental and control group students participating in the research on “Integers” were similar and there was no significant difference between the groups. This study can be a resource for similar studies to be carried out according to the 6-Stage Theory. In order to see the different effects of Dienes principles and 6-Stage Theory, the activities can be applied at different grade levels and the effects of students on academic achievement and permanence can be investigated.
